Creative New Zealand is seeking applications for Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Maori Artist Fund to support emerging Maori artists or practitioners at an early stage of their career to undertake an art project. Creative New Zealand encourages, promotes, and supports the arts in New Zealand for the benefit of all New Zealanders through funding, capability building, our international program, and advocacy.
The Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Maori Artist Fund supports emerging Maori artists or practitioners at an early stage of their career to:
research and creative work
present and distribute their work nationally and internationally
develop skills including mentoring, internships, residencies workshops, and conferences
undertake community or collaborative projects
undertake projects with international connections
publish catalogs, monographs, journals, books, and critical writing.
Amount: $5,000 to $10,000
The fund is offered twice a year, with calls for applications in September 2020 and March 2021.

They are particularly interested in activities that support:
Maori artists and practitioners to learn and extend their nga toi Maori practice knowledge, skills and experience, and progress their careers in Aotearoa and internationally
New Zealanders to access and experience nga toi Maori in communities and regions across Aotearoa.
Who can apply?
To apply for the Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Maori Artist Fund, you must be:
Tangata Whenua Maori, or your proposed project must be managed or directed by Maori
A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (each individual).
New Zealand-based organizations can apply but the organization must be Maori-led. If an organization is applying for funding on behalf of an individual, that person must also be Maori.
International arts organizations can apply but the application must show direct benefit to New Zealand arts.
How to apply
Register or Log in to the portal to start your application for the Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Māori Artist Fund.
Select the Arts Grants to round that you wish to apply in (Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Māori Artist Fund will be offered in Arts Grants rounds 3 and 7, underfunding type). Note that each round has a maximum of 200 applications that can be submitted.

Gather support material.
Complete each question in the portal application form
Submit your application online by 1 pm on the closing date (earlier if you can). If the maximum 200 applications have already been reached, you won’t have the option to submit your application for this Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Māori Artist Fund round. You will be able to cut and paste your material into a new application for the next Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Māori Artist Fund round, or for an Arts Grant (already open or when it opens).
External peer assessors will assess your application using the following criteria.
Is it a strong idea? they look for the following indicators:
The artistic aims are clearly expressed.
The idea is compelling.
The artistic outcome and/or participant experience is likely to be of high quality.
Can it be achieved? they look for the following indicators:
The process to achieve the idea is realistic and well planned.
The budget is thorough and accurate and considers fair remuneration for practitioners.
The people involved have sufficient experience to deliver this project.
Does it deliver to Creative New Zealand outcomes? they look for the following indicators:
The project delivers to the selected strategic outcome.
The project delivers to the selected Arts Grants program purpose(s).
