Head of Protection
Salary: € 56,241.10 circa
Location: Flexible – preferred location is London, Amsterdam or an ARTICLE 19 regional office (if not London, frequent travel to London required)
ARTICLE 19 is recruiting for an experienced Head of Protection to enhance the safety and security of individuals and organisations working to protect and promote freedom of expression and information, as reflected in our strategy, bringing strong project management skills, serving as the primary focal point on our “Protection” thematic area across the organisation.
In collaboration with relevant teams, the Head will identify new strategic areas for ARTICLE 19’s consolidation and growth as a leading advocate organisation for the effective protection of activists and organisations, particularly journalists, social communicators and human rights defenders. Leading in advancing protection standards at global and regional fora, in collaboration with relevant teams, the Head will be a primary force in ensuring effective coordination externally with key INGOs working on protection of FoE/I and internally within the organisation. The Head will facilitate programmatic work in the regional offices and programmes, with a particular focus on supporting the monitoring of attacks on communicators and human rights defenders and deploying ARTICLE 19’s Holistic Protection Training.
The ideal candidate will bring both a substantial understanding of human rights and digital protection expertise, as well as knowledge and experience in monitoring and providing protection methodologies. The candidate will bring a solid understanding of freedom of expression and information issues, protection instruments, fora and discussions. Familiarity with the UNESCO Plan of Action for the Safety of Journalists, for example, is highly desired. Gender expertise and understanding of specific risks faced by women and LGBTI will be an asset.
