According to UNICEF, every ninety seconds, a child dies due to water borne diseases .At the same time, one in every ten people cannot access safe water while three in every ten people in the world lack access to a toilet.
Globally over 2.8 billion people lack quality water and sanitation facilities while over 780 million people drink water that is considered unsafe. Unsafe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kill and incapacitate millions of children leading to deprivation and minimised opportunities for many more.
This Post Graduate Course introduces learners to the core principles of designing, planning, implementing and evaluating projects to improve access to water supply and sanitation facilities and improve hygiene behaviours among communities especially in the developing countries.
The course therefore provides advanced understanding of WASH in the context of wider development and public health challenges and interventions while illustrating the practical solutions necessary to deliver on health, development, humanitarian and /emergency needs
By the end of the course**, the learner**will be able to:
- Master WASH issues and relate them with public health and development challenges in developing countries.
- Master the dynamics and technical issues of water supply, waste management ,drainage and relate them to effective community hygiene promotion interventions.
- Develop competence for budgeting and allocation of resources for WASH programming.
- l Acquire capacity to design, monitor and evaluate WASH programmes
The course targets community mobilizers ,hygiene promoters, WASH managers, project officers, project assistants,public and community health officers, WASH consultants, as well development and humanitarian staff interested in WASH programming.
Module1. Introduction to Water,Hygiene and Sanitation
Definitions of water, sanitation and hygiene programmes and types of WASH Programs and interventions.
Module 2. Hygiene Promotion
Community involvement in WASH Programming, needs assessment,community participation and engagement, community water supply systems, human waste disposal methods, waste management, gender issues in WASH programming.
Module3. Disease Preventionand Management
Defining communicable diseases, types of communicable diseases, disease transmission and prevention, disease control and management, disease outbreak, investigation processes and management.
Module4. Hygiene Education and Health Awareness
Health education and hygiene promotion definitions. The role of hygiene promoters, communication methods and strategies, information and communication materials development, behaviour change communication approaches.
Module5. Environmental Health Hazards
Definitions, biological hazards, chemical hazards, material and natural hazards, identification of hazards and analysis, hazards prevention, control and management.
Module 6. Community Participation in WASH
Defining Community Participation and Involvement, Planning for community involvement and participation, Stakeholder Analysis and resource mobilization for WASH Programmes.
Module7. WASH in Public Institutions
WASH in schools, refugee camps, prisons, markets, urban areas ,slums, rural areas, business set ups etc. Case studies and lessons learnt in WASH in public institutions.
Module 8. Monitoring and Evaluation of WASH Projects
M/E Definitions, Designing and planning projects, Indicators, outputs, outcomes, impact (results), M & E plan, types of M & E, steps in monitoring and evaluation, logical framework models, developing M & E tools, data collection plan, data analysis, data management and communicating M/E outcomes.
Module 9. Technical Issues in Wash Programming
Water collection points, Water treatment, construction of septic tanks and Toilets, Drilling Boreholes, Modern methods of Waste Management.
