Context and story to date
Refugee Youth Service (RYS) was founded in Calais in 2016 and worked to create and run a
safe space for unaccompanied minors within the old Calais camp. Since then the organisation
has expanded its work to Athens, Greece where a youth centre staffed with local professionals
supports young people who are often newly arrived in Greece, to find their feet.
The ultimate goal of Refugee Youth Service is to support unaccompanied children and young
people to re-start their lives where they are, or safely and legally reach an alternative destination
that is in their better interests. In Northern France, RYS now works to provide unaccompanied
minors with support on the ground in Calais and Dunkirk. Our work is holistic, combining
outreach services and psychosocial support as part of a human rights based approach. The
main aim of the project is to promote and facilitate minors access to local child protection
services, whilst aiding them in developing their own individual coping and protective
mechanisms. RYS, alongside its partners, is a strong advocate for change, and continues to
campaign for dramatic improvement in the treatment of children on the move.
We are looking to build an advisory board to support the work of the existing CEO and
leadership. This currently is across northern France and Greece with potential for future projects
across the world.
