Closing date:

The Organisation

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.

Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.

We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 80 years and are now active in more than 70 countries.

The Opportunity

As the Programmes Director you will provide leadership to and management of the Programmes Department in the development and execution of Plan South Sudan’s strategic programme plans. You will be accountable for the overall performance of the Programmes Department and ensure that the thematic Country Programmes teams, the Logistics team and the Programme Unit teams work in an integrated manner to optimize the impact of the programme portfolio.

You will act as deputy to the Country Director and will be a key member of the Country Leadership Team through providing high-level, strategic contribution to the leadership of the Country Program as a whole. You will create high performing teams with effective working relationships between programme staff at the country office and those in field locations.

The Individual

We are looking to employ an organised and analytical individual who has experience and a commitment to participatory and rights-based approaches to development programming. You will have demonstrable experience in designing and leading strategic processes and expertise in ongoing conflict/post-conflict areas.

You will have knowledge of development issues, trends and challenges in community development, as well as a good understanding of disaster risk management issues. You will have knowledge of key programme areas such as child protection, education, livelihoods, etc. with a sound understanding of integrated development issues and critical analysis of child poverty.

To be successful in this role, you will have exceptional conceptual and strategic thinking skills, alongside the ability to make timely decisions in situations where information may be incomplete, based on consultation and sound judgement. You will have strong negotiation, influencing and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.
