The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) welcomes the Australian Government’s endorsement of the joint donor statement on humanitarian aid to Gaza, as announced by Foreign Minister Senator the Hon. Penny Wong on 19 May 2025.
The joint statement, signed by Australia alongside 21 other nations and the European Union, underscores the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza and the immediate resumption of aid deliveries.
The aid blockade imposed by Israeli authorities on 2 March 2025 has pushed the humanitarian response system to the brink of collapse. Earlier this month, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report confirmed that 470,000 people in Gaza are facing catastrophic levels of hunger, with the entire population experiencing acute food insecurity.
“The statement signals Australia’s commitment to upholding humanitarian principles and supporting the rights and dignity of people in Gaza. This is a critical moment for international solidarity and coordinated action to prevent further loss of life,” said ACFID CEO Matthew Maury.
ACFID and its members remain committed to collaborating with the Australian Government and international partners to address the humanitarian needs in Gaza and work towards a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
