Over the years, the health of the mother and her child have been documented as key indicators for socio-economic advancement in a county. Negative drivers, unfortunately, exist in all societies and which impact badly on the well being of these susceptible populations.
Maternal & Child Health (MCH) is consequently being seen as global precedence rather than being thought of as need attention in the developing world alone. Best practices in (MCH) have developed this discipline into an interdisciplinary health and development sector, creating a need for specialized public health professionals who are trained to focus on the wellbeing of the mother and the child. Professionals in MCH are some of the most sought in the health sectors in the world today.

To justify the case for MCH, the Center for Disease Control  (CDC) data shows that approximately eight hundred women die every day due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. World Health Organization data for the year 2016 further revealed that approximately 300,000 women died due to pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. In addition, in 2015 approximately six million children under five years died in the developing parts of the world.
