The European Commission has allocated an additional amount of €25.5 million in several African countries dealing with the repercussions of an unprecedented food crisis, but also with the results of conflict and displacement, as part of humanitarian funding allocated last year.
The additional funding will be used, inter alia, to reinforce social protection schemes and key sectors such as food assistance; nutrition; and water, sanitation and hygiene. In conflict areas, funding will also be allocated to support newly-displaced populations and host communities.
The funds are allocated as follows:
- Algeria: €2 million
- Cameroon: €2 million
- Central African Republic: €4 million
- Chad: €2 million
- Sudan: €10 million
- Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean: €5.5 million
Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič said: “The EU continues to demonstrate solidarity with Africa and the efforts to address the global repercussions of Russia’s war in Ukraine, but also the repercussions of localised conflict and displacement. In several African countries, millions are facing food insecurity and are on the brink of famine. In other parts of the continent, the effects of the food crisis are aggravated by a deteriorating security situation and increased violence leading to internal displacements and loss of livelihoods — for example, in Sudan. ** Extreme weather events are leading to new displacements, for example in Cameroon. The additional funding approved by the EU will support our humanitarian partners in providing aid to those who need it the most, across the continent.”
