Des urgences en cours à Gaza, au Soudan et en Ukraine, nous avons compilé une sélection de témoignages émouvants d’humanitaires de l’ONU qui partagent leur réflexions sur ce que signifie être un travailleur humanitaire, 21 ans jour pour jour après qu’un attentat à la bombe au Siège de l’ONU à Bagdad a tué 22 travailleurs humanitaires, dont Sergio Vieira de Mello, le Représentant spécial du Secrétaire général pour l’Iraq.

« Ils nous racontent qu’ils emmènent leurs enfants au travail avec eux parce qu’ils n’osent pas les laisser à la maison. Ils n’osent pas se séparer de leur famille au cas où quelqu’un serait tué lors d’une grève et qu’ils ne seraient pas ensemble. Les collègues me disent qu’ils préfèrent mourir ensemble plutôt que séparément ».
Faire face à un danger et à une destruction constants
« Nous nous réveillons souvent face à de nouveaux défis. Même à Khan Younis. Vous savez, nous venons de réhabiliter un puits d’eau – c’est une réalisation de la guerre. [Nous avons fourni de l’eau à 100 000 personnes dans la région de Khan Younis, au milieu de tous les décombres et de tous les déplacements. Et maintenant, il y a des chars dans cette zone et les gens fuient… Il est très difficile d’apporter une réponse humanitaire avec ces déplacements forcés, avec les bombardements et les frappes en cours, en étant capable de naviguer dans la zone en toute sécurité. Il est tout simplement impossible d’être en sécurité dans la bande de Gaza.

« Un exemple récent qui m’a fait comprendre ce que signifie être un humanitaire est une rencontre que j’ai eue récemment à Port-Soudan avec une femme d’une trentaine d’années qui s’était échappée et vivait à Port-Soudan, après un périple de 800 kilomètres pour se mettre à l’abri. Elle m’a raconté en détail tout ce qu’elle avait vécu pendant la guerre. Elle était vraiment très émotive.
Mais elle a aussi mentionné comment l’aide apportée par les rations alimentaires mensuelles du PAM l’avait aidée à faire ce voyage et à arriver dans un endroit où elle était en sécurité et où elle pouvait partager son histoire avec moi et évacuer une partie des traumatismes qu’elle avait subis.
Elle pleurait dans mes bras, mais laisser sortir cela et avoir l’espace nécessaire pour permettre aux gens de partager les difficultés qu’ils ont traversées et leur donner l’empathie et la compassion qu’ils méritent après des expériences aussi horribles, c’est cela être un humanitaire ».
La réalité de l’acheminement de l’aide
« Les travailleurs humanitaires du Soudan, en particulier les Soudanais, sont confrontés à l’environnement opérationnel le plus complexe au monde aujourd’hui.
Cela signifie que dans les régions où les gens ont le plus besoin d’aide, il y a des combats actifs, des frappes aériennes, des bombardements, des tirs d’obus dans des endroits comme Khartoum, la capitale (et) la capitale du Darfour du Nord.
Mais le long des routes où nous devons transporter de la nourriture, il y a tellement de points de contrôle, tellement d’acteurs différents, d’acteurs armés impliqués dans différentes lignes de conflit, qu’il faut constamment négocier et communiquer avec ces parties.
