ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Internews is working to improve the usability of open-source security tools to better meet the needs of at-risk civil society organizations, whose unique needs are often overlooked by developers. Many powerful and widely used open-source security tools are maintained by volunteers or small teams who are often under-resourced and unable to prioritize features, guides, and documentation which would better serve high risk media and civil society users.
Internews is looking for a pool of skilled individuals to assist in expanding and improving the documentation associated with these opensource tools. The specialist will work with the tool teams to understand their needs and goals for documentation and will also review feedback gathered through usability testing conducted by organizations partnered with Internews. The specialist will then use this feedback to expand, update, or clarify existing documentation, and develop new documentation as needed. The specialist will be supervised and supported by Internews and, as relevant, connected with a representative from the tool team(s) for input and coordination.
The tools the specialist(s) may support include:
LOGISTICS
The team aims to engage up to five contractors in these short-term, remote positions. Ultimately, this is a remote-based role and candidates anywhere in the world will be considered. Candidates should possess independent work authorization in their work location that does not require employer sponsorship. Additionally, there are some locations where Internews is not able to support remote work.
This is a limited-term position anticipated for February-April 2024.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so candidates are encouraged to apply soon.

Our current team includes a mix of genders, parents and non-parents, and people of multiple races, nationalities, ages, sexual orientations and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are an EEO employer and encourage candidates of all races, genders, ages, orientations, ethnicities, and national origins to apply, and welcome those with alternative backgrounds and experiences.
SCOPE OF WORK
- Desk review of existing tool documentation (including any draft materials not yet publicly available).
- Consultations with relevant representatives of the tool team(s) as well as with end users who have tested and deployed the tools in partnership with Internews to finalize a scope and outline of written work. This will include a review of feedback provided by users during a testing period.
- Draft any edits, additions, etc. to documentation and provide to Internews and the tool team for review/feedback.
- Conduct at least one round of reviews for each piece of documentation and revise as needed in response to feedback provided by Internews and key stakeholders.
- As needed, support the publication, localization and translation process of any documentation edited or produced under this scope of work.
