E4DRR aims to enhance early warning systems through impact-based forecasting using event-based climate storylines, hazard modeling, and impact estimation.
01 April 2024, Nairobi, Kenya: The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) has been awarded funding by the Complex Risk Analytics Fund (CRAF’d) to implement a groundbreaking project aimed at mitigating climate-induced disasters in Eastern Africa.
ICPAC, a specialised institution of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), is dedicated to bolstering resilience in the Greater Horn of Africa through provision of climate services and applications such as disaster risk management.
The project, titled “Hazard modeling, impact estimation, climate storylines for drought and flood disasters in Eastern Africa” in its short form “E4DRR“ was chosen as one of five out of 150 submissions for open call for essential risk datasets by CRAF’d. Supported by international partners such as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, the European Commission, and the United Nations.
CRAF’d aims to finance, connect, and reimagine data to save lives especially in the context of enhance disaster management globally. The project is a two-year project that will be carried out with NORCAP as an implementing partner. NORCAP, part of Norwegian Refugee Council has a long-term partnership with ICPAC to enhance climate and weather services in the region, aiming to better protect and empower those affected by crises and climate change.
This innovative project aims to enhance early warning systems through impact-based forecasting using event-based climate storylines, hazard modeling, and impact estimation. By offering new perspectives on past flood and drought disasters, the project seeks to improve risk forecasting for disaster risk management and reduction in the region, enhancing decision-making processes.
The initiative will also transform the East Africa Hazard Watch Portal into a more effective decision-making tool for disaster risk reduction and provides crucial knowledge for the eight IGAD member states of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.
