JOB PURPOSE
To translate, localise, edit and review Amnesty International’s texts, while adhering to documented quality standards, style guides and requester-specific instructions with the goal of achieving human rights impact. To revise Amnesty’s texts translated by external translators, ensuring the quality of the deliverables. To liaise with and coordinate the work of external translators as required. From a linguistic viewpoint, to provide the relevant regional and global teams as well as Amnesty’s Chinese-speaking entities with Chinese editorial advice and support aimed at a high standard of consistent and coherent communication in the Chinese language across various media.
PROGRAMME PURPOSE
As part of the Directorate of the Deputy Secretary-General, the Language Resource Centre (LRC) provides expert language and production services to the International Secretariat and the Movement. It leverages language skills, shares knowledge and streamlines operations to ensure the most effective and strategic use of language and production funding and resources. It does this by delivering high quality content and services, promoting best practices in the field of language and applying an innovative, multi-disciplinary approach.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Translation and Editorial
- To translate, edit, adapt and revise texts into the target language, ensuring that translations are accurately conveyed for the target audience, adhering to style guides and instructions of requesters.
- To provide initial and on-going training to new and existing freelance translators on key concepts, terminology, style, conventions, etc., that are essential to the translation of Amnesty’s texts, as well as training on software use and procedures, which will enable freelance translators to deliver quality translations in the shortest time possible.
- In accordance with the guidelines of the LRC Terminology Specialist, to contribute to the terminology projects carried out within the LRC by updating the terminology database to ensure the overall terminology deliverables are complete, updated and accurate.
- When required, to support production processes by liaising with the LRC’s Multilingual DTP Specialist and the production teams in the various IS offices or preparing and laying out simple post-translation formatting checking on texts based on the working language.
- To provide the relevant regional and global teams as well as Amnesty’s Chinese-speaking entities with Chinese editorial advice and support aimed at a high standard of consistent and coherent communication in the Chinese language across various media.
- To ensure gender and diversity are mainstreamed into language standards and guidelines.
- When required and subject to workload, to provide cover for language-related work for the Asia-Pacific Language Coordinator and members of ESEAPRO’s communications team to ensure the smooth running of the communications function.

- In collaboration with the Head of Translation & Language Strategy to develop and monitor procedures and quality standards to enable the effective functioning of a high-profile translation service.
- To ensure that translation quality assurance mechanisms are applied in a consistent manner.
