Dominican Republic, Haiti – Tropical cyclone FRANKLIN (GDACS, NOAA, FEMA) (ECHO Daily Flash of 22 August 2023)

  • A new Tropical cyclone named FRANKLIN formed over the eastern Caribbean Sea on 20 August and started moving toward the Hispaniola Island. On 22 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 380 km south of the Bani Town (just west of Santo Domingo Capital City, Dominican Republic), with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h (tropical storm).
  • On the forecast track, FRANKLIN is forecast to continue moving northward over the Caribbean Sea, strenghtening, and it is expected to make landfall west of the greater Santo Domingo area on 23 August in the afternoon (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 102 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over central and eastern Hispaniola Island. NOAA has issued a Tropical Storm Warning over this area.
