Research summary

(Let’s Play Let’s Read): The goal of this research is to explore how a parent-child book reading intervention (We Love Reading program) impacts both parents and their 3-3.5 years old children outcomes. The study will also to explore how stress influences parent-child interaction using cutting-edge technology, including epigenetic sampling, heart rate data, and cortisol samples.

This research is a collaboration between We Love Reading-Taghyeer and Dr. Antje von Suchodoletz, Teaching, Learning, and Development Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi (UAE) and will be conducted in Jordan under the supervision of Taghyeer Organization.

We Love Reading Program was founded by Dr. Rana Dajani in 2006 to foster the love of reading for pleasure among children and creating changemakers around the world, The We Love Reading (WLR) program constitutes training local volunteers to hold read aloud sessions in public spaces in their neighborhoods in the native language of the child.

We Love Reading aims to catalyze long term cultural change through reading and skill development. Our programs help thousands of local women build new capabilities and enable them to act creatively for themselves and their communities. WLR’s reading method inspires children to think independently.

Job Description:

Working under the supervision of a Senior Research Assistant, Manager, or Principal Investigator and following established policies and procedures, the RA will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Recruit participants (mothers and their children) and schedule regular home visits.
  • Enroll participants in the book sharing intervention (We Love Reading Program) and run regular follow-ups.
  • Collect data, perform experimental and analytical procedures following established protocols.
  • Data management including: Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.
  • Piloting surveys and/or cognitive testing, Transcribe and code interview transcripts and cleaning survey data.
  • troubleshoot and communicate with cross-functional team members if technical issues arise to improve study procedures and experience.
  • Work with the Professors to draft manuscripts, research briefs and research-to-practice information to disseminate research findings.
  • Create presentation slides and posters to help researchers present findings.
  • Check facts, translate (AR-EN & EN-AR), proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintain equipment, inventory and order supplies when necessary.
  • Following up with participants, answer their calls and reply to inquiries.

Qualifications

  • BA in relevant field (Psychology, sociology, social sciences, education, HCI, child development, scientific fields).
  • Experience interacting and dealing with Children and toddlers is a must.
  • At least one year of relevant research experience.
  • Excellent command of English both speaking and writing is a must.
  • Experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • Experience using online survey tools such as Kobo toolbox and Qualtrics is preferred.
  • Ability to frequently interact with participants in a friendly and respectful manner.
  • ability to work effectively with MS Office Suite and other common software such as Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
