Technical Field Manager, Azerbaijan
Permanent contract subject to final confirmation of donor funding
The starting salary package for this position is £61,404 GBP / approx. $73,467 USD including all allowances
MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict
About the Azerbaijan programme:
In December 2021, MAG has established a start-up project in Azerbaijan funded by the US State Department’s Office for Weapons Removal and Abatement (WRA) and the Canadian government’s Peace and Stabilisation Operations Program. The widespread use of landmines and UXO during the recent fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia, in November 2020, have created a renewed and urgent need to improve the country’s humanitarian mine action response.
This project will see MAG work to improve the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action’s (ANAMA) ability to deliver an expanded and high-quality humanitarian mine action programme to address the new and legacy contamination, and in turn make affected regions safer for vulnerable communities and internally displaced people. MAG will train ANAMA supervisors in effective team management, as well as delivering a comprehensive review and upgrade of their Standard Operating Procedures. Within further funding MAG is looking to expand our work, capacity building at a national mine action NGO level and introducing new technologies into 2023.
About the role:
The successful candidate will report to the Technical Operations Manager and support them in ensuring overall safe execution of all MAG technical activities within the country.
Our Technical Field Managers are the core of our work and actively manage and lead our teams of technical staff to safely implement our life saving mine clearance and EOD projects. They must be willing to lead from the front, responsible for the day-to-day management of our technical teams often in remote locations and being involved in all aspects of MAG’s lifesaving work, including administration, procurement, reporting and planning. The lifesaving impact the work has on local communities is very real, and rewarding. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in MAG’s life-saving work on a day-to-day basis and make a difference in Azerbaijan.
You must hold a recognised EOD / demining qualification and have significant experience in the technical and operational management and leadership of Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) activities. You must have proven experience leading, motivating, mentoring and coaching a diverse team of people. This role requires the post holder to work independently for extended periods of time in “stand-alone” environments and minimal supervision. Technical knowledge of mines/SALW/unexploded ordnance and mine clearance techniques, including new developments is essential. The ability to develop, review and comply with security and technical Standard Operating Procedures is also required. You must have good literacy, numeracy and IT skills and excellent organisational skills with the ability to plan and coordinate activities and projects. You should have interest in and commitment to MAG’s humanitarian mandate and principles. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a proven track record of delivering training and capacity building of National Technical staff. To be successful in this role, you must be self-motivated, determined and committed to high quality standards and continually improving effectiveness and efficiency. The post holder will also be innovative, creative and proactive with a solution-oriented approach and the ability to meet deadlines and work calmly under pressure.
