Organizational Context

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is a ministry of the Society of Jesus, acting as an international non-governmental organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organisation was founded in November 1980 and now has a presence in 58 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome.

The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs. The main services provided are in the field of education, reconciliation, livelihood activities and psychosocial support. Currently, over 1 million individuals are direct beneficiaries of JRS projects.

Operational Context

Between September 2020 and October 2021, JRS conducted a Global Financial Sustainability (GFS) study, which offers recommendations for the development and implementation of a Global Financial Sustainability plan for JRS. In 2022, JRS also conducted an assessment of global and local functions performed throughout the organisation, which allowed to develop a “Global functions budget”. This budget allowed JRS to obtain a reliable representation of the Global work performed by the IO and the Regional Offices and of the level of involvement of each office in the Global JRS dimension.

To perpetuate this work on the GFS, it is fundamental to ensure that Regional and Country Offices have updated financial sustainability plans and strategies in place.

The Financial Sustainability Consultant will work with JRS Regional and Country Offices to conduct/complete/update their sustainability plans and produce a coherent funding strategy.

Main responsibilities of the position

  • Under the direct supervision of the Finance Officer and Data Analyst, the Financial Sustainability Consultant will perform the following duties:
  • Support Regional and Country offices in conducting and completing their sustainability assessments and producing a funding strategy.
  • Work with the International Office Finance department for the cost analysis of Regional and Country offices.
  • Train Regional offices in conducting sustainability assessments, so that they are able to train and support country offices.
  • Coordinate the workplan and information sharing with the IO.
  • Put in place a global mechanism to regularly update financial sustainability assessments.

Qualification and Competencies

  • University degree in a relevant area or related discipline
  • A minimum of (3) years of work experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent English, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office 365 Suite.
  • Ability to follow complex and unique processes and adapt to change rapidly, as well as to diagnose and resolve technical issues
  • Analytical thought needed to resolve issues in a variety of complex situations.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, including problem-solving, analytical skills, time management and effective multitasking.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive company information responsibly.
  • Ability to translate technical jargon into layman’s terms for explanatory purposes.
  • Strong writing, editing, verbal communications skills and presentation capacities to clearly and effectively conveying information and knowledge.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural, international, professional environment.

Desirable

  • Ideally, working knowledge of French and/or Spanish
  • Understanding of and commitment to humanitarian relief work and international humanitarian standards
  • Previous experience in financial sustainability assessments and planning.
