Indonesia: Floods and landslides, update (BNPB, BMKG, AdiNet, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 18 July 2023)

  • Floods occuring in northern Indonesia, particularly Sumatra Island, on 14 August continue to cause damage and displacement. Heavy rains in Pesisir Selatan Regency on 17 August triggered further flooding and landslides in two sub-districts.
  • According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the floods have affected 2,852 people (713 families) across 10 villages in Pesisir Selatan District, West Sumatra. On 16 August, 100 families reported being displaced by floodwaters. There are no reports of casualties.
  • The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Pesisir Selatan Regency is delivering food, blankets, and mattress support in collaboration with local authorities. National highways connecting the Painan area to Padang City were cleared of landslip debris.
  • BMKG forecasts moderate to heavy rain, lightning, and high winds in west Sumatra until 20 August.
