An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) within the Education department. Humanitarian teaching at LSTM provides top-level, world class education for experienced and aspiring humanitarian practitioners and others interested in this field. Through lectures, seminars and groups work we provide critical knowledge and practical skills to better comprehend and analyse humanitarian action.

Building on the history and expertise of LSTM, through strong interactions between health research and field-orientated innovations we enable committed individuals to become responsible, critical and effective humanitarian professionals.

The successful candidate:

You will play a major role in the development, design and delivery of teaching about the history of international aid, the development of humanitarian thinking and the current theoretical, philosophical and ethical debates in the humanitarian world.

You will undertake teaching and teaching related administration for taught programmes within areas of expertise and contribute to the development and delivery of our Teaching Expansion Plan.

Working within a team of academic colleagues across LSTM you will drive forward the development of humanitarian studies in Masters’ and professional development programmes.

Key responsibilities include (not limited to):

• Teach and support programmes and modules provided by LSTM
• Work closely with LSTM’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team to embed technological innovation in the curriculum
• Contribute to future networking and joint initiatives with partner organisations
• Develop and deliver modules within the Humanitarian Studies Programme
• Develop and lead on distant learning modules in issues of global health, humanitarian theory, history and practice
• Supervise and guide post-graduate students in dissertations
• Support students in placement-based projects via networking and guidance
• Undertake personal tutoring and assist students in accessing support services as needed

Strong applicants will be able to demonstrate:

• Be passionate about humanitarian affairs and to able to inspire practitioners and students to achieve their potential
• At least 2 years teaching experience in the higher education sector (undergraduate or postgraduate)
• Holding a PhD on a topic relevant to Humanitarian Studies (could be International Development, Humanitarian Studies, Political Science, History, Sociology/Anthropology, International Relation or similar)
• Provide academic guidance, including oversight of the needs of students with special requirements
• Clear understanding of current issues, debates and concerns in the humanitarian relief sector
