Overview of Position
- Our client deployed to Mali in January 2013 to conduct an emergency assessment of the situation with regard to explosive threats. In July 2013, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was established under Security Council resolution 2100.
- With Security Council resolution 2690 (2023), it was decided to terminate the mandate of MINUSMA, effective 30 June 2023, after a decade of continuous activities. The Council requested MINUSMA to initiate the cessation of its operations & transfer of its tasks on 1 July 2023, along with an orderly & safe drawdown & withdrawal of personnel, aiming to conclude the process by 31 December 2023. The liquidation of MINUSMA is set to commence on 1 January 2024.
- In alignment with these mandates, our client was engaged to implement a mine action program in Mali. This program aims to support MINUSMA’s liquidation efforts, focusing on ammunition & explosives disposal in the context of camp clearance & explosive ordnance risk assessment for the remaining camps during MINUSMA’s liquidation from 1 January 2024 to 30 June 2024.
Role Objectives
The CTG contracted National Assistant – Vehicle Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance of all vehicle requirements of the demolition team during their day to day management of the safe & efficient disposal of muni assist with the operation of the mine protected recovery vehicles on logistics convoys & missions outside the MINUSMA camps. This includes assisting with mechanical repairs, towing, minor & complex recoveries including the righting of vehicles. The MRV 2nd Operators will be expected to assist in other areas of operations in the workshop when not performing recovery tasks or missions. S / he shall be responsible for his / her travel arrangements & shall liaise with the international CTG staff assigned to them as supervisor, on all security matters. S / he will report daily to the Recovery Mechanic & is responsible for the provision & implementation of the following:
- Regular servicing & maintaining the liquidation team vehicles (OTT, mobile recovery vehicle, B6, ambulance, forklift truck, excavator).
- Performing any repairs of vehicles as required.
- Vehicle convoy & recovery.
- Filling job cards.
- Digging of demolition pits with the excavator.
- Assist the Operations Officers with the preparation of charges & demolition site set up.
- Any other tasks as indicated by the Recovery Mechanic or Operations Officer.
Project Reporting
S / he will report daily to the Recovery Mechanic.
Key Competencies
- Class one mechanic (petrol, diesel & tractor mechanics) with heavy goods vehicle drivers license.
- Must have worked in a high threat environment in a role as a mechanic for at least a full 18 months within the last 3 years, including recovering vehicles.
- Recent experience of working on a UN mission (within the last 36 months in Mali).
- Fluency in spoken English, knowledge of a second UN language an advantage.
- Proven either through native speaking or through at least 2 years working in English speaking environments.
- Experience working independently & as part of a small multi cultural team (desirable).
- Working in a demining / demolition environment (desirable).
- Excavator operator experience (desirable).
- Forklift truck operator (desirable).
- Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve the objectives of the organization accountability.
- To comply with the organization’s rules & procedures.
- Identifies priority activities & assignments, adjusts priorities as required.
- Foresees risks & allows for contingencies when planning.
- Strong ability to analyze information & work under pressure.
