The Program / Department / Team

Mercy Corps alleviates poverty, suffering, and oppression and works to build secure, productive, and just communities in over 40 countries around the world. The Corporate Finance Department supports Mercy Corps globally by maintaining and providing accurate and timely financial information to Mercy Corps, our donors and regulators.

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is primarily responsible for maintaining bank, receivable and investment ledgers in a timely manner and providing general ledger support to the Corporate Finance Department. The Staff Accountant will also ensure smooth daily transactions through problem solving and effective communication with both financial and nonfinancial audiences.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintain bank and account receivable balances.
  • Maintain investment account balances.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations of non-operating and investment accounts.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries as required.
  • Prepare and post inter-departmental and related party journal entries.
  • Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Partner with International Finance and Treasury to maintain donor accounts including coding receipts and adjustments to awards.
  • Respond to audit requests by preparing schedules and gathering source documents.
  • Provide backfill for data transfers from payroll and accounts payable sub-systems into the general ledger.
  • File and archive all non-vendor accounting records.
  • Maintain and update procedures specific to assigned duties.
  • Contribute ideas toward the strategic design of internal processes and systems.
  • Problem solve to ensure smooth daily transactions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • BA/BS in finance/accounting or equivalent experience
  • 1-3 years of experience in a finance related role
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and processes
  • Demonstrated capability working collaboratively with others
  • Effective written and verbal communication with financial and nonfinancial audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize tasks
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Microsoft Office & Google Docs skill set is essential
  • Experience in multinational organizations, nonprofits experience is a plus

Additionally, they will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and be able to communicate financial information in a succinct, organized manner. This position is out of our US Headquarters based in Portland and is remote as of December 2021.
