The role

The people affected by conflict in Ukraine find their situation compounded by a crisis of communication and technology. Vulnerable groups in particular face challenges – older people may not be tech-savvy, while marginalized groups may speak different languages, or require different forms and channels of communication. These groups may struggle to access life-saving information and to have the ability to share their needs and challenges. CLEAR Global is developing program technology solutions to inform more effective two-way communication between those affected by the crisis and those aiming to support them.

The primary focus of the role will be to lead an integrated team of content curators/editors and program technology experts to build an innovative information management system, or ‘hub’, that allows Ukrainians and other conflict-affected people to easily access trusted, up-to-date information, provide feedback to humanitarians, and be heard in their preferred language and format.

The Project Coordinator will coordinate internally and externally to ensure the timely and effective delivery of the information system/hub and communication of language technology, research and other services in support of the Ukraine response. This diverse role combines project management for components of CLEAR Global’s Ukraine response, cross-team coordination for effective development and deployment, external representation, and partnership development to ensure those affected by the Ukraine crisis can access, respond to, and receive feedback from a centralized hub.

The role will supervise the Product Manager and the Content Curator and Editor.

Project Implementation

  • Lead the tech and content teams in delivering and continuously improving the hub experience for users
  • Manage the relationship with the lead funding agency to ensure alignment with vision and needs, grounded in the user experience
  • Coordinate delivery and monitoring of the project, in line with donor and CLEAR Global standards, liaising between teams and with partner organizations, and promoting effective planning and communication
  • Support multi-country development and deployment of the hub
  • Oversee the management of project budgets, evaluation and reporting in line with CLEAR Global and donor requirements, with support from finance
  • Develop funding proposals as needed to ensure a wide reach for the project

Advocacy, Representation and Partnership

  • Advocate for the importance and impact of language and language tech in humanitarian action
  • Represent CLEAR Global’s language technology work in relevant humanitarian forums, including UN cluster and working group meetings, NGO forums, donor conferences
  • Develop partnerships with service and information providers, including NGOs, governments, and others to be involved with and included in the hub.
  • Work closely with UN, NGOs, technology companies, and others in the space to ensure complementarity of efforts and avoid duplication, keeping the user experience at the center

Human Resources

  • Contribute to a positive, innovative and supportive work environment where CLEAR Global’s values are understood and upheld
  • Maintain open and professional relationships with the internal CLEAR Global team, volunteers, partner agencies and donors
  • Recruit and retain the best people for the roles

The Project Coordinator should be an innovative self-starter with a strong sense of initiative, an understanding of the humanitarian sector and management credentials, and enthusiastic about the importance of increasing access to knowledge through language and technology. The right candidate is an energetic team player and leader who agrees with CLEAR Global´s basic beliefs and values and who can work virtually with team members based throughout the world.

  • 5+ years of project management experience in the humanitarian sector
  • Demonstrated understanding of accountability to affected populations/communicating with communities
  • Experience with technology for programs in humanitarian settings
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills in English
  • Familiarity with language and/or communications technology desirable
  • Knowledge of response languages a plus (Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian, etc)
  • Interpreting or translation experience a plus

In an emergency, CLEAR Global provides language support to facilitate vital two-way communication between the people affected and humanitarian responders. This happens both remotely and on the ground. Remotely, CLEAR Global works with a global network of linguists to translate text, audio and audiovisual content from and into the languages of crisis-affected people. We also provide information, guidance, and language mapping support to humanitarian organisations. On the ground, country program teams offer a range of support, from research and training to glossary development and pictorial communication tools. We are also leading the development of language technology for marginalized languages. This has the potential to shift the power dynamic in emergencies and international development contexts, placing control of communication and information access in the hands of the people in need of support.
