Mercy Corps NW conducts regular small business training for entrepreneurs out of our Portland, SW Washington and Walla Walla offices. The Portland office serves over 1,000 entrepreneurs annually. Small business education is an integral part of our economic development programming.

Purpose / Project Description:

Instructors of Mercy Corps NW small business classes deliver defined curriculum to students through these different types of classes:

  • Business Foundations 1{6 wks/18hrs}. This course is facilitated to help entrepreneurs launch a new business.
  • Business Plan Workshop{5 wks/15hrs}, if needed
  • One-on-one general business consulting 50 minute session, 10 minutes of prep {total 60 minutes}.
  • Translation marketing and course material, if needed.

Consultant Objectives:

Build students’ knowledge, comprehension and technical skill of small business concepts, launch, growth, and operation concepts and tools. Provide a positive and inspirational learning environment for students.

Consultant Activities:

The Consultant will:

  • Instruct Portland Metropolitan & Rural, SW Washington location (online & in person)
  • Train students in topics relevant to business startup and operation.
  • Direct students to various resources.
  • Assists students in navigating business challenges through classroom discussion.
  • Facilitate classroom discussion.
  • Communicate challenges and successes to MCNW staff.
  • Collaborate with MCNW staff to manage relationships with students.
  • Attend approximately 2 Train-the-Trainer activities per year held by MCNW for small business instructors.
  • Attend approximately 2 Instructor team meetings per year.
  • Work with MCNW education team staff to coordinate classroom logistics.
  • Track attendance of students enrolled in classes.
  • Provide modest refreshments (reimbursed by MCNW) for every live classes.
  • Translate curriculum and marketing material as needed.
  • Provide backup instruction as a substitute teacher as available on occasion (costs will be re-allocated).
  • Provide one-on-one general business consulting as needed.

Consultant Deliverables:

The Consultant will:

  • Business Foundations 6 week course, Business Plan Workshop 5 weeks.
  • Attend up to 2 Train-the-Trainer workshops per year.
  • One-on one general business consulting, 50 minute sessions,

Timeframe / Schedule:

The consultant shall complete the duties described from on or about March 15, 2022 to Sept 30, 2023, by Mercy Corps Northwest throughout the year on weekdays, evenings and weekends.

The Consultant will report to:**

Southwest Washington PM, BDS Manager, and WBC Manager and Education Coordinator.

The Consultant will work closely with:**

Women’s Business Center Manager, Education Coordinator, SW Washington PM and MCNW Business Development Services team.

Required Experience & Skills:**

  • 5-10 years of experience in relevant technical field
  • Must have owned and or operated a small business or knowledge of operating a small business.
  • Must have 1 to 2 years of business instruction.
  • Business advising or consulting is a plus.
