Italy – Wildfires (JRC EFFIS, Vigili del Fuoco, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 08 August 2023)

  • Over the past few days, wildfires have been affecting Sardinia Island, southern Italy, in particular Cagliari and Nuoro Provinces, resulting in evacuations and widespread damage.
  • According to the Italian authorities, as of 6 August, there are 28 active fire in Nuoro Province and 16 in Cagliari Province; of these fires, 13 required the support of the State Fleet. Media report that 4 people have been injured due to wildfires, at least 600 people have been evacuated, and over 12,000 people are without water supply across Podasa and Siniscola Municipalities. One of the main road has been closed. According to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the main fire in Posada area has an extension of 514 hectares, while multiple other burnt areas located in Cagliari Province are 657 hectares wide in total.
  • Over the next 24 hours, according to the JRC EFFIS, the fire danger forecast is high to extreme over most of Sardinia Region; according to the Italian national warning system the fire danger forecast values are slightly decreasing.
